Full denture
Preparing a removable full denture is the greatest challenge for a dentist as this state indicates that the patient's previous treatments have proved to be unsuccessful. We hope that the description below will convince you that there is hope for the restoration of a functioning and aesthetic masticatory apparatus.
Why would this very treatment be successful?
Full denture is made with the help of a specific - reversible thermoplastic - material and with a developed technology of taking impression. The concept is that this impression material softens due to the temperature of the mouth, so the sides of the denture can be made according to the individual muscles. This results in a denture that will perfectly and conveniently fit on the maxillary crest, palate and gum. It is important to know that there are huge anatomical differences between the mandible and maxilla. The maxillary crest and palate ensures good support to the denture, while the Ex 3 N impression material ensures excellent vacuum. These positive factors help the denture to stay in place and lie stable without using any adhesive.
Lower denture is much more difficult to make as the mandible is flexible, many times forming only a sharp, small crest, furthermore there is the tongue that tries to push out the strange material with its every move. In the case of lower denture it is tight fitting and facial muscles that keep the denture stable. It is extremely difficult to achieve vacuum effect. Correct occlusion and function is ensured by the accurate record of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) movements.
Everything is taken into consideration while making a denture in order to achieve success: the shape of mandible and maxilla, movement of muscles, flexibility of the gum, position of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) and individual (aesthetic) characteristics!
Does a full removable denture have an impact on my quality of life?
People try to swallow or spit out strange materials that get into their mouths. Therefore the first eight days demand concentration, self-discipline and patience of the patients. It takes some time for the body to adopt a denture as if it was natural, but after the muscles and reflexes have taken in the denture, it should not cause any disadvantage in the quality of your life any longer.
How long does it take to prepare my denture?
If you have no teeth at all, denture can be prepared in 3 days:
If it is necessary to extract a root or do other kind of oral surgery, bones and soft tissues have to heal first (from 6 to 8 weeks). A temporary denture is prepared for this period, the permanent one is made only after the mouth has healed. It is worth spending the next 2 or 3 days with checking and correcting smaller errors, healing incidental upsurges that can occur after having begun to use the new denture.
Is it possible to make a fixed denture for me with the help of implants?
An average of 80% of our patients is satisfied with the full dentures made by us. If patients feel that they can not get used to removable denture, and the quality of bones are suitable, naturally we will prepare a denture that is fixed to implants.
How will my denture look like?
Like your original, natural teeth!
It may sound impossible, but actually there is more possibility to restore the shape, colour and position of natural teeth than in the case of a fixed replacement (e.g. partial denture) where the shape and position of surrounding teeth have to be taken into consideration. Modelling helps to prepare a customized denture, and dentist and patient decide together what the new denture will look like or how it will be positioned and so on.
Will I be able to eat with my denture?
Yes!
Denture is prepared in an accurately defined position (recording of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) movements, the position of the lower and upper dental arch are accurately fitted together so that the denture remains stable during chewing as the lower dental arch is backed up from both sides. You will need a lot of patience and a lot of eating! Here are some "tricks" that can help you chew and bite: do not bite food with incisor teeth (front teeth), but with teeth a bit more to the sides, around the canines, and use both sides of the denture at the same time while chewing!
Will my denture disturb me when I speak?
No!
The accurate and fitted positioning of dental arches, their stability and the naturalistic teeth (in terms of both shape and size) will give you the same sense and function as your natural teeth. After getting the new denture, it is recommended to read aloud as a practice until your body adopts the new restoration denture as its own.
Do I have to use denture adhesives?
Do not use adhesives if possible!
If you still do, then we recommend that you use powder or fluid in the case of permanent denture, as they are designed in a way that they sit on the gum, mandible and manxilla very tightly. It may happen that there will be absolutely no need to use adhesives in just a short time as the denture will "lie" and close tightly on its place.
If you get a temporary denture due to an oral surgical intervention (tooth extraction, gum correction etc.), it will be shaped in a way that sides will not close perfectly. Its purpose: to protect the wound (it heals in about 6-8 weeks) and to provide a solution for this short period from aesthetic considerations. In this case you can use adhesive creams or tapes or anything else that suits you to fix the denture.
What shall I do with my denture during the night?
Use it around the clock in the first few days!
Some people say you should not wear it at night - false!
Other people say you should wear it round the clock - false!
There are days when your body works off accumulated stress, tiredness during the night, so you may grate your teeth. In the case of natural teeth, tooth-roots are supported by fibres that "strengthen" bones when you bite. However, when you have a prothesis, the vascularization of the gum between the denture and the bones worsen due to the pressure, and this result in the retrogradation of the bone. Therefore we would recommend that you take out the denture for the night after a stressful, loaded day, however, you can keep it in for the night after a pleasant, peaceful day.
How to clean my denture and my mouth?
Use tooth brush and tooth paste!
It is worth rinsing your denture and your mouth after every meal. Clean your tongue also with the help of a tooth brush, with sweeping movements from the back to the front (because the self-cleansing mechanism of the tongue will be ceased due to the plastic, cilia of the tongue will stick together thus decreasing the function of gustatory papillas, and eventually the sense of tastes!).
Use Tabs and other strong dental cleansers only if you can not brush the denture with a tooth brush. Use it for at most half an hour (not all night), then rinse it thoroughly with water.
Use 5 minutes every day when you have time to massage the alveolar crest roundly with one of your thumbs, so you can stimulate the vascularization of your gum, the nourishment of the alveolar crest and decrease the possibility of retrogradation of the bone!
It is recommended to go to an appointment after six months in the first year, then annually later on.
