Welcome to Hungary

Forget all about your dental treatment and let yourself be amused by this wonderful city, Budapest, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe. Treat yourself with a tour along the multicultural heritages in the heart of the city and relax in one of the ancient Turkish baths afterwards. Budapest, also known as the "Pearl of the Danube" has many things to see: architectural masterpieces, ancient Turkish baths, modern aqua parks, museums, historical parks, traditional restaurants and night life for all tastes. It is worth to have a tour on both sides of the city. From the Pest side you can see the breathtaking view of the Buda Hills and the Castle District; while visiting the Buda side don't miss the great view of Pest with all the historical buildings along the river bank.

Travel back in time and have a nice walk on the charming narrow streets among the dwelling houses at the Castle District. As you pass by the Baroque and neoclassical houses, don't forget that most of these buildings are connected to each other under the ground and that the Buda Hills has an extensive number of caves as well. Both the caves and the underground corridors are open for the public. If you are interested in “life underneath”, don't miss the Cave Hospital! Must see attractions on the ground includes, among other things, the Royal Palace and the Fisherman's Bastion. In 1987, the UNESCO included the whole Castle District and the Danube Embankment to their World Cultural Heritage Program.

dentist_abroad_hungaryCross the Danube on one of the beautiful bridges and let yourself be charmed by the architectural wonders and historical streets of inner Pest. Visit the eclectic neo-gothic Parliament building which offers a nice counterweight to the Buda Castle on the other side of the river. Have a guided tour and open your eyes to catch the Byzantine influence and the 40 kg of gold inside the building that was the largest parliamentary building in the world at the time of construction. The Pest side of the capital also has a hidden underground treasure: the Millennium Underground, which is the first underground of the continental Europe. This underground line runs below Andrássy Avenue which is a World Heritage site lined by eclectic neo-renaissance palaces and luxury products. The millennium line links two main sightseeing areas of Budapest. One of them is in the heart of the city with the Opera House, St István Basilica and Dohány Street Great Synagogue, whereas the other area lines up the Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery and a beautiful park which embraces the largest medicinal bath in Europe, the Budapest Zoo and the Hungarian State Circus.

Just as the Hungarian culture, Hungarian cuisine was formed along with the history of the nation and influenced by surrounding cultures but remained characteristically Magyar over the times.

Traditional Hungarian dishes are varied, creative - and most definitely - not for someone on diet... The dishes are spicy, even the dentist_abroad_hungary_2soups are hearty and entirely mouth watering. Eating habits from the ancient times lived through the centuries – the authentic stews and goulash (gulyás) are originated from the semi-nomadic tribes of the Euro-Asian steppe and still very popular.

But the Hungarian cuisine is much more than that. In the 15th century, Matthias Corvinus not only opened his Royal Court for politicians, artist and philosophers from Italy and western Europe but also gave a chance to their refined gastronomy to blend into the Magyar and eastern savours, creating the unique flavours of today’s Hungary.

Budapest is not called the „city of baths” by accident. There are nearly 100 medicinal springs all over, or rather under the area; Hungarians are great believers in the positive powers of thermal bathing indeed.

dentist_abroad_hungary_4The first baths are dated from the Roman times (2nd century), however, the real bathing culture was developed during the Turkish occupation in the 16th-17th century. The four remaining Turkish baths (Császár, Király, Rác and Rudas) are the real masterpieces of the Ottoman architecture with wonderful octagonal pools, cupolas and colored glass windows – adding a bit of Oriental atmosphere to the city. So let the steam and hot water wash away your fatigue in the baths!
